The Uvalde Police Department (PD) and the police force attached to the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District (CISD) are no longer cooperating with Texas’ investigation into the mass shooting at Robb Elementary School.
The school shooting at Uvalde was one of the worst mass shooting incidents of its kind in the history of the United States, leaving 19 children and two adults dead. The Uvalde PD and CISD Police’s response to the crisis has been criticized since the beginning for reportedly not doing enough to stop the shooter and prevent more kids from dying.
According to multiple sources who spoke to news outlets, the decision to stop cooperating occurred immediately after Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director Col. Steven McCraw held a news conference during which he said the Uvalde PD’s decision to delay entering the classroom where the shooter barricaded himself was “the wrong decision” and contrary to protocol.
DPS is currently conducting an investigation into the massacre and reviewing the response of law enforcement. (Related: Texas officials revise story, say teacher closed school door before deadly Uvalde mass shooting.)
A spokesperson for the DPS did not confirm the story but did say the police chief of the Uvalde CISD police force has refused calls for follow-up interviews with Texas law enforcement agencies.
“The Uvalde Police Department and Uvalde CISD Police have been cooperating with investigators. The chief of the Uvalde CISD Police provided an initial interview, but has not responded to a request for a follow-up interview with the Texas Rangers that was made two days ago,” said the spokesperson.
DPS officials are investigating both Uvalde CISD Police Chief Pete Arredondo and a teacher at Robb Elementary School for actions that may have inadvertently helped 18-year-old gunman Salvador Ramos commit his killing spree.
Uvalde police officials claimed that a teacher at Robb Elementary propped open the door through which the gunman entered the school. This assertion was immediately walked back following pushback from the teacher and her lawyer.
According to Don Flanary, the teacher’s lawyer, she closed the door while informing the 911 dispatcher that the shooting had begun, but its automatic lock malfunctioned and did not prevent the gunman from entering the school.
“She thought the door would lock because that door is always supposed to be locked,” said Flanary.
Uvalde PD and CISD Police are also being blamed for engaging in a standoff with the shooter for nearly 50 minutes rather than taking charge of the situation by entering the school to deal with the gunman immediately.
While the shooter was barricaded in a room, as many as eight or nine children who were with him were still alive and were calling 911 pleading for help.
Uvalde police officials earlier claimed that they presumed all children inside the classroom were dead. However, footage obtained by ABC News directly contradicts this claim. Police dispatched had relayed information to officers approximately 40 minutes before the shooter was dealt with, saying the room he was in was “full of victims at this moment.”
The condemnation of the police response has been so widespread that both Texas Republicans and Democrats have criticized it. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said in a press conference that Uvalde police have “misled” him with “inaccurate” information about the sequence of events during the crisis, while Democratic Texas Rep. Joaquin Castro has called for the Federal Bureau of Investigation to step in and investigate the actions of the police.
